It’s time to get out the vote – again!

The Wilmington Drama League proudly presents our Annual One-Act Play Festival. For two nights, we’ll be presenting four very different, dynamic one-act plays, and you get to vote for your favorite. The winning play will represent the Drama League at the State One-Act Festival this March.

General admission tickets to the festival are only $8. Please note that some plays contain adult language.

Based on a True Story

A SPECIAL DRAMA LEAGUE EVENT

Always…Patsy Cline is more than a tribute to the legendary country singer who died tragically at age 30 in a plane crash in 1963. The show is based on a true story about Cline’s friendship with a fand from Houston named Louise Seger, who befriended the star in a Texas honky-tonk in 1961, and continued a correspondence with Cline until her death.

The musical play, complete with down-home country humor, true emotion and even some audience participation, includes many of Patsy’s unforgettable hits, such as “Crazy,” “I Fall to Pieces,” “Sweet Dreams” and “Walking After Midnight” – 27 songs in all – performed with a live country band! The show’s title was inspired by Cline’s letters to Seger, which were consistently signed…

The show features the award-winning vocal interpretation of CINDY SHIELDS and the comedic talent of SUE HORNUNG. And come meet and greet the cast after the show on October 2 – 4!

Overview

All Charlie wants in the world is to win a Golden Ticket to tour Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory. This fantastical place is home to the mysterious Oompa Loompas, chocolate streams and sugar-filled dreams. Join Charlie and the other ticket-winners – gluttonous Augustus Gloop, screen-obsessed Mike Teevee, gum-chewing Violet Beauregarde, and the poster child of spoiled brats, Veruca Salt – on their adventures through this magical world. Includes the songs “Pure Imagination,” “The Candy Man,” “I Want it Now.”

Overview

Ponyboy has always been proud of his life and willing to stand up for his friends. For this teenager in 1960s America, the world is divided into two groups of people: the “socs” (socials), who have a lot of money and the attitude to go with it, and the “greasers” like himself who live on the fringe and struggle to get by. S.E. Hinton’s classic novel, first published in 1967, explores what happens when the rivalry between these two groups gets pushed too far, and Ponyboy sees his world crumble as he learns that soc or greaser, we’re all human.

August Wilson’s Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning drama Fences explores how the reality for black people in America was far different. Part of Wilson’s acclaimed Pittsburgh Cycle, Fences tells the poignant and enormously entertaining story of a father and son in conflict over their identies as black men and hopes for the future. Wilson is ranked among the great American playwrights, and in telling the stories of black Americans, he reveals universal human truths about the struggle for love, dignity, and happiness.

The WDL is thrilled to present the first Delaware production of this iconic rock n’ roll theatrical masterpiece! Inspired by Puccini’s opera La Boheme, RENT tells the story of eight young artists in New York’s Alphabet City as their lives become intertwined on Christmas Eve in the 1990s. For the next year, they share laughter, love, heartbreak, illness and death. A modern classic, RENT is about the resilience and strength that family can bring. 525,600 minutes…how do you measure a year? Note: RENT contains adult themes and language.

Seasons of Love Campaign

The Drama League is proud to announce the Seasons of Love Campaign – a way to honor and celebrate life while helping the Drama League and AIDS Delaware.

For our production of RENT, a large faux-brick wall will be featured as a major part of the set. For a minimum donation of only $10 or $15, we will write the name of a loved one who is living with, has succumbed to, or has been affected by AIDS, HIV, or any other disease on one of the bricks. The bricks will be visible throughout the run of the show, and your donated brick(s) will be yours to keep when the show ends in February. Your tax-deductible donation will benefit both the Wilmington Drama League and AIDS Delaware.

Death of a Salesman tells the timeless and heartbreaking story of a man’s loss of touch with reality and his family’s attempts to cope with his self-destruction and the lingering ghosts of his past.
