The Outsiders

April 16 – 25, 2010

Directed by Marge Ventura
Adapted by Christopher Sergel
From the novel by S.E. Hinton

Overview

Ponyboy has always been proud of his life and willing to stand up for his friends. For this teenager in 1960s America, the world is divided into two groups of people: the “socs” (socials), who have a lot of money and the attitude to go with it, and the “greasers” like himself who live on the fringe and struggle to get by. S.E. Hinton’s classic novel, first published in 1967, explores what happens when the rivalry between these two groups gets pushed too far, and Ponyboy sees his world crumble as he learns that soc or greaser, we’re all human.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream

May 14 – 29, 2010

Written by William Shakespeare
Directed by Ann Bartley & Jeff Robleto

“Directors Ann Bartley and Jeff Robleto create a faithful and funny version of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” at the Wilmington Drama League. The ability of the Wilmington Drama League to present classic works such as this is a testament to their artistic commitment. The staging of a Shakespearean comedy this funny is a testament to their artistic skill.” – Tom Butler, Wilmington News Journal

Overview

Falling in love has enough ups and downs for mere mortals, but when mischievous fairies get involved, it’s downright tumultuous. In the timeless comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Shakespeare shows love gone awry through weaving together the mortal world, ancient Athens, and fairy magic. Enjoy the witty, shifty Puck mixing things up for the earnest quartet of confused young lovers, and watch Bottom, the comedically clueless aspiring thespian, become the object of affection for the glorious fairy queen Titania.

Fences

March 12 – 27, 2010

Written by August Wilson
Directed by Henry Porreca

Overview

In 1957, blacks and whites living in the North theoretically enjoyed equality. August Wilson’s Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning drama Fences explores how the reality for black people in America was far different. Part of Wilson’s acclaimed Pittsburgh Cycle, Fences tells the poignant and enormously entertaining story of a father and son in conflict over their identies as black men and hopes for the future. Wilson is ranked among the great American playwrights, and in telling the stories of black Americans, he reveals universal human truths about the struggle for love, dignity, and happiness.

A modern classic, RENT is about the resilience and strength that family can bring. 525,600 minutes…how do you measure a year? Note: RENT contains adult themes and language.

Seasons of Love Campaign

The Drama League is proud to announce the Seasons of Love Campaign – a way to honor and celebrate life while helping the Drama League and AIDS Delaware.

For our production of RENT, a large faux-brick wall will be featured as a major part of the set. For a minimum donation of only $10 or $15, we will write the name of a loved one who is living with, has succumbed to, or has been affected by AIDS, HIV, or any other disease on one of the bricks. The bricks will be visible throughout the run of the show, and your donated brick(s) will be yours to keep when the show ends in February. Your tax-deductible donation will benefit both the Wilmington Drama League and AIDS Delaware.
